Enrique Ruiz won his first ever championship driving for Franklin F1.
Will Hoskins finished second behind his team mate by just six points.
Karl Beckenbauer was third in the Championship for Liverpool in their first season.

The 2014 F1F Virtual Grand Prix Championship was the second season of the F1F Virtual Grand Prix Championship, a virtual motor racing championship run by Nic Morley for members of the F1 Fanatic website. This series is recognised by the Formula One Fanatic (F1F) governing body as the highest class of competition for virtual motor racing. The season started on 25 March in Australia and ended in Mexico on 20 December after seventeen races.

The 2014 calendar featured some revisions to the calendar with the Portuguese Grand Prix taking place for the first time at the Estoril circuit and the Japanese Grand Prix switching venues from from Suzuka to Fuji after a series of bad accidents during the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix involving the Suzuka pit entry.

Nathaniel Powers started the season as the defending Drivers' Champion after securing the series' first ever title at the 2013 Brazilian Grand Prix. He moved to Downton from Franklin, and despite a dramatically improved season for the team compared to 2013, Powers was mathematically eliminated from the championship battle at the Italian Grand Prix.

His replacement at Franklin - Enrique Ruiz - was the driver to take the title from him, taking it in the final race of the season from team mate Will Hoskins. He was four points behind going into the race but won with Hoskins only third, eventually taking the title by just six points. Karl Beckenbauer was third in the Drivers' Championship, 45 points behind second placed Hoskins.

With a 1-2 in the Drivers' Championship, Franklin successfully defended the Constructors' Championship they won in 2013 - re-claiming it in Japan - and eventually finishing 103 points ahead of second placed Liverpool. Meanwhile Downton improved dramatically from 2013 to finish third overall, albeit 191 points behind Liverpool.

Team changes

  • Following the exclusion from the series of BMW Zyla, series organiser Nic Morley called for new entries. A number of teams were thought to have applied although names of entries were kept secret. Force Australia were finally confirmed as the team who had been awarded the final slot on the grid for 2014 and soon announced they would have title backing from Intel and use BMW engines despite the German manufacturers claims they would leave the sport following BMW Zyla's dismissal.
  • At the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix Nic Morley confirmed Molto Veloce would not be participating in 2014 following the team managers absence from the last seven races. Hollis Graham was absent from the paddock along with many senior members of the team and the mechanics were left to devise strategies and run the cars alone. Morley also announced he would open up entries for another team to take their place. On 6 February 2014 Morley confirmed Warrior Racing would take the remaining grid slot.
  • Downton removed Orange from their team name and also announced a switch from Pagani engines in favour of building their own. Team 23 announced soon after they would also use Downton engines for 2014 and would also participate in a technical link-up while confirmed KLM as a title sponsor having previously not had one.
  • Following BMW's initial withdrawal from the sport Ingram confirmed a switch to Honda power and a technical tie-in with Franklin.
  • Robert Mathershaw announced early in the 2013 season that Mathershaw Technology would become Liverpool Grand Prix for the second season after a major sponsorship deal from the football team was confirmed. The first Liverpool car was powered by Vauxhall engines.
  • Lucas Grand Prix confirmed they would drop 'Wilson' from their name while also announcing a switch of major sponsorship from Sony to Syco. The team also switched from Yamaha to Volkswagen engines.
  • Meteor were brought out by French car manufacturer Peugeot for 2014 and also built their own engines.
  • After Downton's announcement of becoming a works team in it's own right for 2014 Westwood Racing followed suit and confirmed they too would build their own engines for the upcoming season.

Driver stats

New Drivers

All new drivers must spread 66 points between Race, Qualifying, and Wet ability; the lower the number the better performance. These are not chosen by team managers. A driver can not start with an ability area below 19.9.

Finances

World Constructors Championship prize money

Teams receive end of season prize money based on their end of season finishing order. The prize money changed for the end of Season Two. As follows;

  • 1st: £40m
  • 2nd: £35m
  • 3rd: £32m
  • 4th: £27m
  • 5th: £24m
  • 6th: £22m
  • 7th: £20m
  • 8th: £18m
  • 9th: £16m
  • 10th: £15m
  • 11th: £14m
  • 12th: £13m

New Teams

Teams that are entering the series for their début season will receive £13,000,000 (the same amount as the 12th place finisher).

Research and Development

As of Season Two managers must research next seasons car or develop the current seasons car. Each development (0.1) will cost £500,000. Managers can not spend more than £3,000,000 a race and can also not spend more than £1,500,000 on one ability area a race. Managers must present this in their messages as of next season; example as follows;

  • R RA - 0.1 equal to £500,000
  • R QA - 0.3 equal to £1,500,000
  • R WA -
  • D RA -
  • D QA - 0.1 equal to £500,000
  • D WA - 0.1 equal to £500,000

If a manager fails to explain and send their chosen developments before the individual race, it will be assumed they have chosen not to research or develop.

The developments teams make will be added to their chosen ability areas. At the beginning of every season Race, Qualifying, and Wet ability is reset to 20.0 before adding on developments.

Race Winnings

At the end of each race teams received race winnings depending on their highest drivers finishing position. Teams only receive the prize money from their highest drivers finishing position. As below;

  • 1st - 4th: £500,000
  • 5th - 10th: £400,000
  • 11th - 14th: £300,000
  • 15th - 20th: £200,000
  • 21st - 24th: £100,000
  • DNF: £0

Race Strategies

Team managers who fail to send in their strategies before the chosen deadline will have both drivers be put on 5 stop strategies with 3 of those stops being held back to back. The team will also face a £3,000,000 fine.

Driver Changes

Mid season driver changes

Teams can have no more than 4 drivers race for them in a single season.

Drivers changing teams mid season

Drivers are allowed to change teams mid season with the appropriate managers deciding their own deals and prices. Team managers can hire drivers mid season such as former drivers. If a manager decides to put a former driver in their team mid way through the season, they must pay the price depending on where they finished in their last championship season.

Car Numbers

Teams will choose permanent numbers for the duration of their careers. The number's 1 & 2 will be reserved for the team for which the Champion drives, with teams set to choose consecutive numbers between 3 & 98. 3 & 4, 13 & 14 and 91 & 92 will be accepted however pairs such as 4 & 5, 14 & 15 and 92 & 93 will not. The team for which the Champion drives will have their "regular" numbers reserved while they are using the number's 1 & 2. For 2014 this was Downton who chose numbers 13 & 14 and would thus have them put on reserve.

Young Driver Test

The 2014 season will be the first season in which a Young Driver Test takes place at the end of the season. The test will last for two days and will be held at Silverstone.

Olen Inman topped day one of the test for Liverpool.

Season report

Karl Beckenbauer won the season opening Australian Grand Prix after teammate Adrien Simon, who had taken pole and was leading, was blocked by, and subsequently involved in an incident with, backmarker Gerard Alaniz. Defending Champion Nathaniel Powers endured a difficult weekend for his new Downton team, eventually retiring after an incident with Romano Agostino and a recovering Simon. Franklin led the constructors after Will Hoskins and Enrique Ruiz finished second and third respectively.

Following this podium Hoskins won the Malaysian Grand Prix after a race long battle with Liverpool driver and polesitter Beckenbauer that only ended at the final corner of the race, when Hoskins forced his way through. Beckenbauer's teammate Simon took a comfortable lead at one point but threw it away after missing his pit box during a pit stop, although recovered to take the last podium spot from Agostino at the final corner. The result meant Hoskins and Beckenbauer tied on 43 points apiece for the Championship lead with Franklin and Liverpool also tying for the lead of the Constructor's on 58 points after Ruiz retired after being collected by Enzo Domenicalli, whose brakes had failed. Meanwhile there were a number of incidents in which car's rolled over during the race, leading the series organisers to announce a change of car for the following season.

Hoskins followed this up by claiming pole position in Bahrain and went on to win the race, setting fastest lap on the way. Beckenbauer was on course for second until his gearbox failed four laps from the end, handing second place on the podium to reigning Champion Powers, who claimed his first ever podium for Downton and the teams best result to date. As a result Hoskins opened up a 25 point lead over Beckenbauer in the driver's Championship. Ruiz inherited the final podium spot to make it a double podium for Franklin and catapult them into a 32 point lead of the Constructors Championship following Beckenbauer's retirement and Simon's sixth place.

Simon recovered to take pole in Britain ahead of his teammate Beckenbauer, the Liverpool's locking out the front row. Beckenbauer reversed the result in the race however, claiming his second win of the season and trimming the gap to Hoskins to 12 points in the Championship after Hoskins finished fourth following a mistake. Ruiz finished third once again and Nikolai Milkovich finished a shock fifth for Ingram. With a 1-2 Liverpool cut the gap to 16 points to Franklin in the Constructors Championship.

In Canada it was once again Simon who took the top spot in qualifying, with team mate Beckenbauer alongside for the second race in succession. The Liverpool cars were closely matched, with both Franklins right behind taking third and fourth positions. Unlike Britain, Simon managed to hold off the fight from Beckenbauer to take a ten second victory from the German, who cut Hoskins championship lead to six points after the Franklin driver finished fourth. Once again there was an unlikely face in fifth position, with Fun's Hugh Dwyer taking home a solid haul of points for the Finnish team. With a second 1-2 in a row, Liverpool moved level with Franklin on 152 points at the top of the Constructors Championship.

Hoskins took his second pole of the season in the United States but that was where normality ended in the Grand Prix. After a chaotic race Diego Campos claimed his and Ingram's first ever victory with Domenicalli and Tumo Kinnumen claiming their first ever podiums in second and third respectively. Abel Osterhagen also scored his and Warrior's first ever points with fourth while Kurtis Gardner scored points in his first ever race with fifth. Reigning Champion Powers had looked on course to give Downton their first ever victory until an incident with Liverpool's Beckenbauer, who finished sixth and re-took the Championship lead from Hoskins, who failed to score after being caught up in a mid-race incident between Jarod Lindsey and Puccio Giodano and was also passed by Marcus Thunder on the final lap for tenth. Ruiz retired as well after being rolled over by Agostino and so having taken no points from the race Franklin fell fourteen points behind Liverpool in the Constructors Championship.

Franklin locked out the front row for the Spanish Grand Prix with Hoskins taking his third pole ahead of Ruiz, who just denied Downton's Powers his first front row start of the season. The race was over early for Championship leader Beckenbauer after he was wiped out by Osterhagen at turn one. Rain arrived just before mid-distance but nonetheless Franklin looked set for a fairly comfortable 1-2 - despite the rapidly closing Peugeot of Lewis Ellington - but threw it away when they collided in the pits, Ruiz running into the back of Hoskins and taking his team mate out of the race. Ellington picked up the pieces to take the win with Ruiz recovering to second and Jean Mattson taking his first podium of the season on his return to the series following Lindsey's two race ban. As a result of the race Liverpool's lead in the Constructors was cut to two points over Franklin as Ruiz moved level with Simon for third in the Driver's Championship. Force Australia also picked up their first points with Felix Beyer eighth and Hiroto Nakumaya ninth.

Simon returned to pole in the first ever Portuguese Grand Prix but was immediately beaten off of the line by Ruiz, who only surrendered the lead for a few laps after his first pit stop. Ruiz went on to claim his first ever win in the series with Simon second and Powers picking up third after Beckenbauer had to make a late pitstop from what was third place after losing his front wing colliding with the retired car of Osterhagen. Hoskins finished fourth to take the Championship lead by one point from his team mate, four from Beckenbauer and eight from Simon, while Franklin took an 11 point lead in the Constructors over Liverpool.

In France it was once more Hoskins on pole with Beckenbauer second, Simon third and Kinnumen a surprise fourth. There was a scary accident on the opening lap as Thunder suffered a combination of partial brake failure and missing his braking point for the hairpin, colliding with the back of Mattson and very nearly eliminating his own team mate too. There were a number of incidents at the hairpin during the race, most involving the attacking driver spinning the driver in front. One such incident damaged the races of two Championship contenders as Beyer spun Beckenbauer round, who was then hit head on by Hoskins, both cars suffering front wing damage. The most notable incident at the corner during the race was when Simon was hit by the returning Douglas Bacon and pitched into a roll, retiring on the spot. A third large accident occurred during the race when Davenport dived down the inside of Giodano at the first chicane spinning himself out, when the returning Lee Fuller arrived on the scene with nowhere to go and launched over the top of the Lucas car, crashing heavily back to the ground and into the barriers. Admits the chaos Milkovich came through to claim an unlikely victory with Powers second for his second podium on the trot. Ruiz completed the podium in third to take the Championship lead from Hoskins, who was fourth, while Beckenbauer retired on the final lap, meaning Liverpool failed to score and thus fell a further 27 points behind Franklin.

The top three on the grid from France was replicated in Germany but Ruiz was fourth to ensure a top two rows Qualifying lock-out for Franklin and Liverpool, with all four cars within a tenth of a second. Hoskins streaked away at the start and Beckenbauer came under pressure from the fast starting Giodano. Giodano tried to pass a number of times into the second chicane and twice hit Beckenbauer's car before hitting him a third time and rolling Beckenbauer over and out of the race. Behind on the same lap at the same corner Ellington spun Simon into the wall - resulting in Simon breaking his front wing - and Powers also got caught up, dropping down the field. During the pitstops Ruiz passed Giodano and followed Hoskins home to complete Franklin's first 1-2 of the season, with Giodano following in third for his first podium of the season. Ellington was fourth while Powers recovered to fifth and Fuller scored the first points of his return in seventh. Michal Kubat was cruelly denied his first point on the final lap when Milkovich tagged him at the second chicane and moved past. With Liverpool failing to score again Franklin moved a further 43 points clear of Liverpool and after taking the win Hoskins moved back into the Championship lead.

Beckenbauer fought back to break Hoskins' run of pole positions in Austria and demoted the Championship leader to second on the grid, however Hoskins reversed this immediately at the start, taking the lead at turn one and never relinquishing it. Beckenbauer followed home a distance second while Ruiz took another podium in third. Milkovich was impressive once more with fourth while Downton recorded a double points finish with Powers fifth and Thunder sixth. Simon retired from ninth late in the race with suspension failure. Following Austria, Hoskins advantage over Ruiz extended to 15 points with Beckenbauer 48 behind, while Liverpool fell to 103 points behind Franklin in the Constructors.

Beckenbauer took his second pole position in a row in Belgium, once more ahead of Hoskins, but was yet again beaten off the line and into turn one in what was a rain-soaked race. Hoskins went on to win but not before two of his closest competitors - Simon and Ruiz - both retired through collisions, Simon crashing in the pitlane, and Ruiz in an altercation with the lapped car of Mattson while leading. Elroy Wagner finished second in an impressive performance for Team 23 but blew any chance of a win by making a mistake exiting turn one as Hoskins left the pitlane from his final stop. Beckenbauer finished third with Domenicalli fourth in a strong performance and Thunder out-performed his champion team mate to finish fifth, with Powers seventh. With his win and Ruiz retiring, Hoskins lead stretched to 40 points while Franklin's grew to 113.

It was a third pole position in a row for Liverpool at the Italian Grand Prix, although Simon took the top spot for the fifth time in the season, breaking his team mate's run of two poles, who himself qualified down in 11th after a poor session. In a processional race the top four finished at they started, with Ruiz, Hoskins and Giodano crossing the line behind Simon. Domenicalli moved up to fifth from sixth on the grid securing a strong double points finish for Rossi in their quest to overhaul Downton - who failed to score for only the second race this season - for third in the constructors. Beckenbauer could only recover to ninth. Having beaten his team mate Ruiz trimmed Hoskins' championship lead by three points to a gap of 37, while Simon re-claimed fourth from Powers', who was finally mathematically eliminated from championship contention. Meanwhile in the Constructors Franklin extended their gap to 119 points.

Liverpool took their fourth pole in a row in China, with Beckenbauer once more topping the field in qualifying. However, as in Austria and Belgium, he lost the lead early on, as Ruiz took it through the first corner. The Liverpool's and Franklin of Hoskins spent a lot of the early section of the race going backwards as they were passed by quicker cars who were lighter on fuel, but order was resumed at the finish, and Ruiz won from Beckenbauer, Hoskins and Simon. Kinnumen finished a strong fifth as his Westwood car finally held on until the flag, but Domenicalli wasn't so lucky, retiring from seventh on the penultimate lap. Having won with Hoskins third, Ruiz cut the gap in the Championship to 27 points while Beckenbauer trimmed his gap slightly to 68. Meanwhile Simon was eliminated from contention and having pulled 10 more points over Liverpool, Franklin extended their gap to 129, meaning Liverpool would need 1-2's in the final 3 races with Franklin non-scoring to deny them a second consecutive title.

Ruiz broke the run of Liverpool pole positions with his first ever pole in Japan, and yet despite taking fastest lap he failed to capitalise, retiring from second place with a gearbox failure six laps from the end. He was the last in the long list of retirements that included Domenicalli - who was flipped out of contention at turn one by Harding, Nakumaya - who was hit by team mate Beyer on the opening lap, Wagner - who retired after an aerial crash of his own following contact with Gardner - who barrel rolled but miraculously continued to finish 11th, Kinnumen and Giodano - who both retired with suspension failure and Agostino, who ran out of fuel. The double retirement for Rossi was a serious blow to their hopes of taking 3rd in the Championship from Downton, who scored their highest ever points tally in a race with 3rd for Thunder - his first podium for the team - and 4th for Powers, both who followed home Milkovich in second and Simon, who won. Having failed to get the 1-2 however (Beckenbauer only 5th after starting 15th) and with Hoskins finishing 9th, Liverpool failed to deny Franklin the Constructors' Championship, and the 2013 champions retained their title. With Ruiz retiring and Hoskins 9th, Hoskins extended his championship lead to 29 points with 50 remaining, and Beckenbauer fell out of contention.

Simon returned Liverpool to the front of the grid in Brazil with another pole position but Ruiz - starting second in front of his home crowd - got the jump off the line and led the race from lights to flag. Simon tailed him home in second while Milkovich took the final podium position - his second in a row - after Hoskins' three stop strategy failed and left him running eleventh before his gearbox failed two laps from the end. The race saw eight retirements - the most of any to date - including a strange aerial incident in which Kinnumen rolled his car after hitting a kerb too hard, a horrific shunt on the start finish line as Domenicalli collected Dwyer's stopped car at full speed and a heavy crash at turn one for Wagner when his brakes failed. With Domenicalli out and Giodano finishing far down the field after an earlier incident with Gardner, Rossi failed to score any points while Powers and Thunder were 6th and 7th for Downton, securing the team third place in the Constructors. Meanwhile with his win and Hoskins' retirement, Ruiz closed the gap in the Drivers' Championship to 4 points with one race to go.

Beckenbauer took pole position for the final race but like many starts before him, second placed on the grid Ruiz got a better start and was leading by turn one. Hoskins wasn't so lucky from third and got stuck behind Beckenbauer and held up for the entire race. With Ruiz winning and Hoskins third, Ruiz took the title by six points, with second placed Beckenbauer re-taking third place from his team mate Simon, who finished fifth. Dwyer had a strong race to fourth although only after Milkovich retired from the place late on with brake failure pitching him into the wall. Powers had a miserable race in his final one as reigning champion finishing down in 14th, while Team 23 took a single point in their final ever race with Mattson tenth.
