Calendar
The calendar consisting of twelve races was announced on 13 November 2021.
* Races marked in gold make up the eVirtual triple crown and are all double length and worth double points.
Rule changes
Calendar
The calendar will move away from being solely on street circuits, to an equal mix of oval, road and street courses. As previously featured in IndyVirtual, the calendar will incorporate the Triple Crown, which are double length and double points races.
Design Philosophy
For 2021, teams will have to choose a design philosophy for their cars. The options will be Oval, Road or Street and will give that teams cars a boost on the respective circuit types.
Qualifying
Qualifying will shift to a three-session format to accommodate the increase in teams. Q1 will feature the bottom six teams in the Championship at each race (with the exception of the first race, which will feature the bottom six teams from the result of the previous Championship), with the six fastest drivers progressing to Q2 and the six slowest failing to qualify for the race. Times will be reset and Q2 will feature the six drivers who progressed from Q1 and the 20 drivers from the top ten teams in the Championship, with the top ten progressing to Q3, also known as Super Pole. For Q3, times will once again be reset and drivers will get just a single lap - one car at a time - to decide pole position and the remaining places in the top ten.
This will differ slightly in Triple Crown races, which will see all 32 cars qualify. The difference being that Q1 will set the last six places on the grid rather than seeing the drivers fail to qualify.
Strategy
Strategy options will be added for 2021. Before each race, teams will need to check the weather forecast and pick a strategy option. Whilst rain can appear in these races depending on the percentage chance of it in the forecast, the tyres are all-weather tyres so will not need to be changed from wet to dry. Oval races will always be dry as ovals are too dangerous to race on in the wet.
The strategy options will be tyre compounds for road and street races (Soft, Medium or Hard), and power modes for oval races (Attack, Balanced or Efficient). Soft tyres and Attack power mode will see cars race faster but pit more often, while cars on Hard tyres or in Efficient power mode will be slower bit pit less frequently.
Strategies must be submitted before the deadline. If they are not done so, the offending cars will put onto the most common tyre compound/power mode for that race, and handed a penalty depending on how many times they have missed the deadline.
- First offence - 3 place grid penalty
- Second offence - 5 place grid penalty
- Third offence - 10 place grid penalty
- Fourth offence - Qualifying exclusion (for teams in Q1, this will automatically result in a failure to qualify)
- Fifth offence - Race exclusion
Safety Car
As was the case in 2020, the safety car will return in 2021. This will be all important in 2021, as when the safety car is deployed the pit lane will be closed. For any cars due to pit, they will do so when the pit lane reopens after a couple of laps, and will be allowed to re-join the back of the safety car queue before racing resumes.
Driver changes
Drivers can be changed mid-season if teams wish. Only drivers who have not competed in another series on a full-time basis during 2021 can be entered however. All driver changes are at the discretion of the series organiser.
