Calendar changes
Rule changes
Blue flags
Blue flags have been abolished for 2022. This means drivers who are about to be unlapped will no longer be required to make way for a leading driver. The FVA acknowledged this rule change is a risk as it could create problems for lead battles, but also have hope that it will create less incidents between front runners and back markers. The shortening of the race distance will also help minimize the amount of about to be lapped back markers. The teams overwhelmingly voted 'yes' to this rule change and it will certainly be one to keep an eye on.
Tyre compounds
The Super Soft tyre has been removed for this year. The Soft, Medium, and Hard will now be the only three choices teams can make. While this means teams have one less strategic choice, it is believed it should create closer races especially with the race distance shorter.
Qualifying
The session previously known as Q1 will feature both a name change to Pre-Qualifying, and a change to number of teams partaking. The bottom five teams in the championship (the bottom five from 2021 for the first five rounds) will be required to compete in Pre-Qualifying for 2022. This means ten drivers will be competing and only the fastest six will make their way through to qualify for the race.
