The Phoenix PX2 was a Formula Virtual racing car designed by DS Phoenix for use in the 2019 Formula Virtual World Championship, the team’s second season in Formula Virtual and their first under the new name of Ecotricity DS Automobiles Team Phoenix. The car was driven by Sergio Álvarez and rookie Thierry Xylander.
History
The PX2 was launched at pre-season testing in Estoril, Portugal. In a very low-key unveiling, the PX2 was wheeled out of the team’s garage in the pits as a few passers-by watched on. With the new car being ready just in time for testing, many expected Phoenix’s second season to be a tough one.
This looked to be the case early on in the season after a best finish of 15th from the opening three rounds, before a magnificent double points finish in Malaysia took the team to 8 points and established midfield runners – one year on from the heartbreak at the same circuit in 2018.
Phoenix went from strength to strength after this; eleven further points finishes – including three more double points finishes – saw the team end the year on 49 points, taking 7th place in the Constructors’ Championship for the second year running.
Sponsorship
Ecotricity were DS Phoenix’s title sponsor and were represented on the car by an impressive Ecotricity-styled Union Jack, on the monocoque, as well as the standard logo being present on the top of the monocoque. DS Automobiles also had a large presence after Phoenix became a factory DS team over the winter break. Vitafoam kept their place on the airbox and were joined by Memorex, who’d returned for another year. Crowne Plaza Hotels took Ronseal’s spot on the sidepods as the paint manufacturing company took on a smaller spot next to the driver. The Co-Operative also remained with the team and featured on the upper sidepod. Other sponsors on the PX2 were; Bulmers on the front wing, United Biscuits on the upper nose and Airbus towards the rear of the sidepod. The car also featured the logos of parts suppliers Alcon and GKN, as well as Total Energies on the front and rear wing endplates. The Phoenix Motorsport badge remained in its place on the nose and The Manchester Bee emblem featured in front of the cockpit. Charity Anxiety UK’s logo was also on the car as DS Phoenix looked to help increase awareness of anxiety.
