The Phoenix PX1 was a Formula Virtual racing car designed by Phoenix for use in the 2018 Formula Virtual World Championship, Phoenix’s debut season in the series after stepping up from FV2 following the 2017 season. The car was driven by Carson Davenport and rookie Sergio Álvarez.

History

The PX1 was launched at the team’s base in Greater Manchester, England ahead of pre-season testing in Estoril a few weeks later. Davenport, Álvarez and reserve driver James Thompson unveiled the car to the press.

The car made its race debut in the 2018 Australian V-Prix, where Davenport finished in an impressive 14th place and Álvarez retired after colliding with Sebastien Vocquelin’s Meteor.

The car proved to be a solid first attempt from Phoenix and the first points of the season came at the rain-soaked 2018 Malaysian V-Prix, where Álvarez was classified as 9th but ran as high as 4th before the car failed at the final corner on the final lap of the race. Seven further points finishes came over the rest of the season as Phoenix found their feet and the car improved to become a regular points contender. The team finished the season in 7th place in the Constructors’ Championship with 19 points.

Sponsorship

Foam manufacturing company Vitafoam held a prominent position on the car’s engine cover, the company’s luminous yellow and blue colours creating an identity that became synonymous with Phoenix’s burgundy. Ronseal took another key spot on the car, on the sidepods, with drinks manufacturer Barr alongside. Other sponsors on Phoenix’s first FV car were; The Co-Operative on the monocoque, Memorex on the rear wing, JCB on the rear wing endplates, PG Tips and Kellogg’s on the front wing and local company Simply Resin on the front wing endplates. The car also features the logos of Phoenix Motorsport, Judd, Formula Virtual and Goodyear.
