The 2021 Formula Virtual World Championship is the ninth season of the Formula Virtual World Championship. The series is a virtual motor racing championship run by Nic Morley. It is competed amongst members formally of the F1 Fanatic/RaceFans website, who have since migrated to Discord servers, and is recognised by the Formula Virtual Association (FVA) governing body as the highest class of competition for virtual motor racing.
Nathaniel Powers started the season as the defending Drivers' Champion. The Briton took his fourth title at the 2020 Brazilian V-Prix.
Downton started the season as reigning Constructors' Champions after securing their third title at the 2020 Mexican V-Prix. At the United States V-Prix they successfully defended their title and as a result broke the record for the most Constructors' Championships, winning it for a fourth time overall and a third consecutively.
Teams and drivers
The following teams and drivers are currently scheduled to participate in the ninth season of the Formula Virtual World Championship.
[N 1] Thompson was entered in the Japanese V-Prix, but was withdrawn following practice and replaced by Hanson.
Team changes
- FIRST Robotics sold their share in FIRST Motorsport after deciding the team needed more funding than they could provide to make a sustained challenge in the series.[32] Their share was later announced to have been sold to Palmetto Racing Group.[33]
- Cheema slipped into financial difficulties off the back of a poor 2020 season, which ultimately saw the team sold to a private investor. The team was renamed Highwind FV Racing as a result.[23]
Driver changes
- Tumo Kinnumen and Karl Beckenbauer switched teams in 2021. Kinnumen returned to Westwood - where he raced from 2014 to 2017 - while Beckenbauer raced for his seventh different team in Highwind.[10]
- Puccio Giodano returned to Ocelot on loan from Westwood after spending a year with the British outfit. As an additional part of this deal Olen Inman - who joined Westwood part way through 2020 - also joined the team on loan as reserve driver, leaving Dominykas Zvironas and reserve driver Pablo del Fuego without seats.[12] Following this move, Westwood signed VWRS Champion Jules Barclay as Giodano's replacement.[11]
- Danilo Forini made his debut in the series driving for Franklin, following three years competing in VWRS. He replaced Enzo Domenicalli, who left the team after one year.[22]
- Lopez driver Max Meyer moved into the series driving on loan at AMR, taking the place of Dmytro Kovalenko who moved into the reserve driver position.[31]
- Brock Kidd made his Formula Virtual debut with North Star in place of Gabriele García, having previously competed in and won both the IndyVirtual and eVirtual series.[4]
- Meteor announced during the press conference for the 2020 Italian V-Prix that Giani Ledesma would return to his reserve driver role for 2021 after being parachuted into a race seat in 2020 following the early season departure of Lewis Ellington to Arrow. This was to allow Carson Davenport to join the team on loan from Lucas.[30] Lucas later confirmed that Davenport would be replaced by VWRS runner-up Maximilian Thunström.[20] Meanwhile Ellington parted ways with Arrow and was replaced by Ingram junior Zander Brynildsen on loan.[26]
Mid-season changes
- On 19 March 2021 Thierry Xylander confirmed via Twitter he would miss the opening race of the season.[34] This was as a result of injuries sustained in a cycling crash with Nathaniel Powers during a joint training camp over the winter, forcing both drivers to miss pre-season testing.[35][36] Eight days later, Phoenix announced reserve driver James Thompson would take his seat for Japan.[17] After participating in practice however, Thompson was withdrawn from the remainder of the weekend and the team ran Dominic Hanson in the race instead.[18] Xylander returned for the second round in Malaysia the following week.[37]
- Having been signed as a reserve driver, it was later confirmed Oleksandr Zozulya would race for Ingram in two V-Prix during the season. Once in Turkey in place of Jean Mattson, and once in Canada in place of James Vasquez.[8]
- Following a crash at the Belgian V-Prix, Phoenix announced that driver Sergio Álvarez would miss the Italian V-Prix due to injuries sustained.[16] As the team had already used a third different driver during the season - when Dominic Hanson substituted for Thierry Xylander in Japan - Hanson was the only driver available to substitute. Álvarez was deemed fit to race and returned to the car for the Canadian V-Prix.[38]

Calendar changes
- The Austrian V-Prix returned to the calendar after missing out in 2020, however will now take place at the Salzburgring as opposed to the Red Bull Ring, where all five previous Austrian V-Prix's were held.
- The Emirates V-Prix will make its debut, having originally been scheduled to do so back in 2016, taking place at the Dubai Autodrome. This will replace the Bahrain V-Prix, and as such will be run as a night race.
- As a result of Austria returning and the calendar remaining at sixteen races, the Mexican V-Prix was discontinued.
- On 27 March 2021 it was confirmed that Australia and Malaysia would switch places on the calendar, with the latter becoming round two and the former round three. [40]
- On 14 July 2021 the revived Austrian V-Prix was cancelled and replaced by the Mexican V-Prix, which became the penultimate round of the championship, meaning all other races moved a round earlier. [41]

- New teams will receive the same amount as the lowest placed teams.
The cost of research changed as well. While the cost of a development point remained at £200,000, the cost for research increased to £400,000.
Technical changes
New development areas were opened up for teams to invest in for this season. Teams can now develop aerodynamics, engine, chassis, drive-ability and launch control, while previously the options had been limited to aerodynamics and engine.
The extra soft tyre reverted back to being the super soft.
Race format changes
The race distance was reduced from a 305km minimum to a 225km minimum, thus reducing the lap count at all races and the duration of the race. The wear rate and pace of each compound of tyre was adjusted to account for this.
