The 2020 Formula Virtual World Championship is the eighth season of the Formula Virtual World Championship. The series is a virtual motor racing championship run by Nic Morley. It is competed amongst members formally of the F1 Fanatic/RaceFans website, who have since migrated to Discord servers, and is recognised by the Formula Virtual Association (FVA) governing body as the highest class of competition for virtual motor racing.

Enrique Ruiz started the season as the defending drivers champion after winning his second title at the 2019 Brazilian V-Prix. He was unable to defend his title, as he finished runner up to Nathaniel Powers. Powers won his fourth title at the 2020 Brazilian V-Prix, an all time record.

Downton successfully defended the World Constructors' Championship, becoming the first team to do so since Franklin in 2015. This was the teams third title, putting them level with Franklin for the most Constructors' Championships.

Team changes

  • Excelsior left the series after the 2019 Malaysian V-Prix and did not return for 2020.
  • Holmqvist left the series after the 2019 Bahrain V-Prix and did not return for 2020.
  • Following the 2019 French V-Prix, Franklin announced they would be leaving the series at the end of the season.[44] The day after, it was confirmed that Westwood would be returning in their place.[35] In a surprise about turn just days prior to pre-season testing, Franklin announced they would in fact be back for 2020 after all, albeit now fully funded by team boss Jamie Franklin following the departure of all sponsors.[8]
  • Mathershaw announced a split from DS Automobiles after five years.[45] Two weeks later, Phoenix - who had joined up with Mathershaw at the start of 2019 - also announced their split from the French manufacturer.[46] Just over a month later, Mathershaw confirmed a new partnership with Porsche; rebranding the outfit as Porsche Team Mathershaw for the German marquee's first foray into virtual motorsport and also announcing Porsche would supply other teams in 2020.[2] Towards the end of the 2019 season Westwood confirmed that they would be supplied by Porsche for their first season back,[36] while just under two weeks before pre-season testing, it was announced Lopez would also be powered by the German manufacturer[25] having split with Downton at the end of 2019.
  • Downton reaffirmed their partnership with DS Automobiles despite Mathershaw ending theirs, also announcing that Phoenix would replace Lopez in their list of supplied teams from 2020.[20] However, DS Automobiles later announced they would completely withdraw from the series at the end of 2019, thrusting Downton's future into uncertainty.[47] This was secured four days later though, when Downton announced a new multi-year deal with McLaren, which would extend to customers Lucas and Phoenix.[5]
  • Lamborghini announced that they were to enter the series as an engine supplier from 2020.[48] The day after, Meteor - taken over by Italian owners during 2019 - confirmed the Lamborghini deal was theirs, while also announcing they would switch to a new base in Italy, as well as entering the 2020 season under an Italian license.[15]
  • Andromeda were declared bankrupt towards the end of the 2019 season, and were forced to withdraw from the series after just one season of competing.[49] Six days later, it was confirmed by series organiser Nic Morley that four applications had been received, and of those four Arrow had been selected to replace Andromeda.[40]
  • Following the announcement that Franklin would leave the series, as the 2019 season neared it's end, their engine supplier Honda confirmed they too would depart, leaving long-time customers Ingram in search of a new provider.[23] In February, it was announced the team had struck a deal with Jaguar to bring the British manufacturer into the series, where they would also power new team Arrow, who will form a partnership with Ingram.[24]
